Ways you can bring smudging to your everyday life

Smudging is such a simple trick to elevate your space and I’m here to explain why.

Smudging is the act of burning one or more medicines gathered from the earth. It is the ritual of burning herbs with the purpose of cleaning the energy of a physical space, object, or person.

Smudging produces negative ions. Negative ions are produced by nature and our bodies need them because it strengthens our immune system and it helps decrease stress. It increases the production of serotonin, which is one of the biggest mood stabilizers in our bodies which is why so many people often feel lighter and in a better mood after smudging.

When we are out in the world, wether it’s in school, work, shopping, etc, we are in places where there are a lot of people. With a lot of people, there tends to be a lack of negative ions in the environment and that tends to cause stress within our bodies. Lack of negative ions can also weaken our immune system, create exhaustion, and even lack or difficulties with sleep.

We all want to live a more joyful and less stressful life and you can achieve that by bringing smudging into your day in quick and simple ways.

There are a lot of different plants that can be dried and used for smudging. I typically love to use sage and palo santo because they are the easiest to find and are usually inexpensive. You can experiment with different plants and see how they make you feel.

You can use smudging as a way to begin your day. If you journal or have some sort of a slow morning routine, I encourage you to add smudging to it. It can completely elevate your routine and it sets such a great tone for the rest of your day. I usually smudge the house with palo santo after I drop the kids off at school. It is quiet and I can speak my intentions and clear the energy.

You can use it while you clean. You’re already cleaning your space physically, why not clean it energetically. The smoke from the smudge actually helps eliminate airborne pollutants that can interfere with our health and well being. Doing a deep smudge as your are cleaning is extremely powerful and will leave your space feeling cleansed and lighter. If you feel called to walk into a room and burn some sage or incense before you clean, trust your gut.

You can cleanse your space with smudge before and after you have company over. When you smudge before, it makes your home feel welcoming and nurturing for your guest. Once they leave, you smudge to reset the energy and negative ions in your space and to reclaim your space once more.

You can smudge right before bed. I have a showering ritual that I love to do right before bed. It includes lighting some palo santo in my bathroom, which carries out into my bedroom. Smudging your bedroom before bed is such a great way to end your day because of the release of serotonin and the negative ions in the air.  It can drastically improve your ability to have a restful and recharged sleep. It smells amazing and it creates a sense of readiness for sleep.
